Youth Coach, Referee, Field Director | Nashville Soccer Community
Community involvement through sports is a vital aspect of my life, and I have the privilege of working with children of all ages to teach them valuable life lessons through the wonderful game of soccer.
In addition to sharing dribbling skills, game rules, and the essence of teamwork, I emphasize the importance of patience, focus, camaraderie, resilience, and simply enjoying childhood. I strive to help each child discover their potential and guide them through this journey as their self-esteem is shaped.
Many of the children I coach come from single-parent households where parents often work evenings, or their grandparents are their parents, potentially leaving a gap for support.
At the start of each session, my primary goal is to create a welcoming environment filled with open communication and joy. I fully meet the kids where they are—especially those who may be shy or self-conscious, like the little ones aged 3-5 who are often joining a team for the very first time and may be the only child at home.
Coaching requires a sensitive and nuanced approach, regardless of age, as each child learns at their own pace. The most rewarding moments come when parents share how their child can't stop talking about Coach Atilio, especially the shy ones, who never speak to me, but follow my instructions. Knowing that I've made a positive impact truly warms my heart, and without them realizing it, they, in return, are building my confidence and self-esteem.
I respect and cherish the trust that families place in me, recognizing that I am the one stepping into a child's community, leaving lasting impressions—good or bad—that they will carry throughout their lives.
Beyond coaching the youth, I also serve as a referee and site director at Frederick Douglass Park, Old Hickory Village Field, and Casa de Dios Indoor Soccer for the Mid-State Youth League. In my spare time, I give myself time to enjoy the game by managing and playing for two adult soccer teams that compete at Elmington Park and the Boost Fit Club.
When I arrived in 2018, Nashville embraced me as one of its own, and it was this community that first truly made me feel at home.
I believe that community is essential to our lives, enriching our experiences and fostering connections. We all come together to support and uplift one another, and it’s this spirit of togetherness that I hold close.
